Description
Although published as No.2, this sonata is believed to have been composed before the C major work now numbered Op.1. Cast in a turbulent F-sharp minor, it is dedicated to Clara Schumann and shows a wilder, more overtly Romantic temperament than its companion. It captures the emotional intensity of the young Brahms in a particularly direct way.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)
Johannes Brahms was a composer born in Hamburg who rose to prominence after being championed by Robert and Clara Schumann, later settling in Vienna. He fused classical formal rigor with Romantic expressiveness across symphonies and chamber music, and in his later years wrote many introspective piano miniatures.
