Description
This is one of the sonatas Bach composed in his youth, before he settled into the more balanced style of his mature works, and it shows a freer, more experimental structure. Each movement shifts character dramatically, alternating improvisatory flourishes with strict fugal writing that reveals the young composer's ambition. Running over ten minutes with more than three thousand notes, it asks an advanced player to sustain focus through its many contrasting scenes.
